In 2026, two apps stand out among our partners: Candy.ai, which we tested in French, and Xotic AI, richer in features (calls, videos, stories) and in English. The right choice mostly depends on your language and your token budget.

What is an AI girlfriend?
It is a conversational companion driven by artificial intelligence. You choose or create a character (looks, personality, backstory), then chat with it by message. Depending on the app, it can also send you generated images, a voice, even a video.
It is not a date. The character feels nothing, does not wait for you and cannot consent the way a person can. It is a fantasy entertainment, sometimes very well made. Keeping that in mind is the best way to enjoy it without getting lost in it.
Candy.ai: the simplest if you want French
Candy.ai is an AI companion platform for adults. During our August 2026 test, done in French, three things stood out: an interface in French, a creative chat that stays consistent with the character, and image generation built into the conversation.
Prices noted on 3 August 2026 ranged from the equivalent of €3.99/month over 12 months to €13.99 for one month. These amounts are not a promise: check today’s checkout. The real cost depends on tokens, which images in particular consume.
Xotic AI: more features, but in English
Xotic AI presents itself as an “NSFW” AI companion platform, meaning adults only. Its official documentation describes a broader catalogue than most:
- chat with existing characters or ones you create;
- a “Girlfriend Experience” with relationship levels and gifts;
- image and video generation, including videos where the character speaks;
- voice calls and avatar video calls;
- “Worlds”, interactive stories to play;
- a community feed to share your creations.
The free account (“Basic”) gives 5 messages a day, the free model and a single custom character. The subscription (“Ultimate”) unlocks the rest. The pages we consulted were in English.
What about Promptchan?
Promptchan is a third option, geared more toward visual creation than conversation. Its home page highlights creating an AI girlfriend, generating images from a description, an editing tool (“Tweak”) and video generation, in realistic, anime or fantasy style. Getting started is announced as free, with a paid “Pro” offer. The interface is in English.
The site displays more than 11 million users worldwide: that is the operator’s figure, not an independent measurement. We have not tested it and do not give it a score.
How much does an AI companion really cost?
The subscription is only the front door. Both apps use an in-app currency to pay for the heavier features.
At Xotic AI, the official price list is public, which deserves credit. It states:

The subscription includes 1,000 XOT per month of subscription, paid in one go at the start of the period: 3,000 for a quarter, 12,000 for a year. Do the maths: 1,000 XOT is 20 images, or 20 minutes of voice call, or 4 minutes of video call. Beyond that, you need to buy packs.
The documentation says so itself: “unlimited” refers to access to features, not unlimited generation. Prices in euros appear on the plans page, in your currency where possible.
Cancellation and refunds: what to know before paying
On Xotic AI, you cancel in Settings → Subscription → Cancel. Your access stays active until the end of the paid period. On refunds, the sources contradict each other: the terms speak of “final and non-refundable” payments, for subscriptions and tokens alike, while the billing FAQ mentions “case by case” handling through support. Assume that what you pay is lost if you change your mind.
On Candy.ai, our August 2026 test account had a management and cancellation option in the settings. Check the terms attached to your own purchase.
For bank discretion, Xotic AI says it uses a third-party payment provider “designed to be discreet”, without publishing the exact descriptor. Our Candy.ai transaction showed a descriptor linked to the publisher.
The real downsides of AI companions
- Tokens blur the bill. An image here, a minute of call there: the budget goes fast.
- These apps are designed to hold your attention. Relationship levels, gifts, a character who “resists”: it works, and it is intentional. Keep a time limit.
- Your privacy is still an issue. Xotic AI states that your conversations are never public and that your creations stay private until you publish them. Still, avoid sharing your name, address or real photos.
- It is not a person. The conversation can feel like presence. It replaces neither reciprocity nor the unexpected side of a real encounter.
How to choose your AI girlfriend?
- Language first: if you want everything in French, Candy.ai has a head start; Xotic AI and Promptchan are in English.
- Try for free: Xotic AI’s Basic account (5 messages a day) is enough to get a feel for the tone.
- Spot what you will really use: just text, or images and calls? Only text stays cheap.
- Work out in euros what your token use will cost before choosing a long plan.
- Prefer a short plan at first, even if yearly is cheaper per month.
Our verdict
Candy.ai remains our pick if you want a simple experience in French: it is the one we tested, and the chat convinced us. Xotic AI is more ambitious on features (calls, videos, interactive stories) and publishes a clear price list, but it is in English and its refund policy is strict.
The best reflex in both cases: start free, check the token cost of what you enjoy, and only take the yearly plan once you are sure.
